Introduction : Where subjects have threshold concepts that students must grasp to be able to move on in a topic some monitoring is required to assess when the majority of the group has picked these up and the lecturer can move forwards. Online polling is a quick and easy way to achieve this. | ||
Activity: Using a free online survey site such as Polldaddy set up a user account and save short polls of 3-5 questions. Put the URL for the poll on the projector. Students with smartphones can complete the poll online, others can do so on paper. Answers are anonymous and can be reviewed almost instantly by the lecturer. What score must a hazard have to be classed as a category 1 hazard? What sort of deficiencies would you look for when doing a hazard rating for damp and mould growth? What is a deficiency under the housing health and safety rating system? | ||
Impact: Assessment of uptake of subject matter and ‘sense-making’ can be made almost instantaneously | ||
Learner outcomes : Feedback and discussion can be made to the responses and the lecturer can pick up common misconceptions. Allows responses by those less confident in larger groups. Enables assessment of the point learners are at in order to progress the group onto further areas only when the lecturer is confident that foundation concepts have been grasped. | ||
